4 Financial Diversification Workshops in Merseyside

Social Enterprise Network in association with SELNET (Social Enterprise Lancashire Network) is providing free workshops for Social Enterprises in Merseyside.

New National Social Enterprise Awards Launched

The Social Enterprise Coalition is calling on social enterprises from across the UK to apply for the brand new Social Enterprise Awards, a nationwide competition that will find and reward Britain's best social enterprises. The application period begins today and will run until 28 September 2009.

Success at Charity Networking Event

A charity networking event hosted at the Varsity saw a record attendance from businesses and charities.

The event was organised by Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services (LCVS) in partnership with Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and more than 60 organisations attended the event.

The evening which ran from 5.30PM to 8PM on Wednesday, was designed for charities and their contacts to network with each other and learn about new developments in the sector.

Government funding 'crucial' to help social enterprise tackle rising unemployment

Government funding is crucial to help social enterprises tackle rising levels of unemployment, claims a leading social entrepreneur on the day unemployment figures hit 2.44m in the UK.

The government announced this morning that unemployment increased by 220,000 between April and May, resulting in an unemployment rate of 7.8 per cent.

The BBC reports there is particular concern surrounding youth unemployment, which it says has risen to 12.4 per cent among 18 to 24-year-olds.

Co-op to sell schoolchildren's winning social enterprise product

A major supermarket chain has agreed to stock a new social enterprise product created by young social entrepreneurs.

It is understood that the Co-op has agreed a deal that will see contestants from schools across the UK compete to develop a new social enterprise product that will be sold in the supermarket chain.

Liverpool appoints organisation to run social work pilot

Liverpool council has appointed social enterprise Liverpool Personal Services Society to deliver its social work practice pilot.

The company will run the practice, which launches in October, until March 2012. Liverpool is one of six areas in the UK piloting the "GP-style" social work practices, which will involve independent teams of social workers overseeing services for young people instead of local authorities.

Sport investment needed to tackle youth crime

Unemployed youngsters funded to join social enterprises

At least 12 social enterprises have won funding in the first round of the government's £1bn Future Jobs Fund, it has been announced.

This will mean new projects launched for some, and rapid growth for others.

Richard Cummings, HR manager of office furniture recycling social enterprise Green Works, said his department managers were 'over the moon' with the news they would have 51 young people on board to drive forward expansion plans.

The Government has published a draft of a legislative reform order that will grant new powers to credit unions.

The new legislation, which is expected to be voted into law after Parliament's summer recess, will allow credit unions to pay interest on accounts and pay any dividends they choose to shareholders.

£15M FUNDING TO CREATE THOUSANDS OF GREEN JOBS

Some £15 million of funding is to help create thousands of green jobs to improve neighbourhoods across England and Wales.

It comes after environmental regeneration charity Groundwork together with the National Housing Federation successfully bid for the money from the Government's Future Jobs Fund.

The funding, awarded on Wednesday, will create around 2,000 new jobs across England and Wales and benefit thousands of local neighbourhoods and the environment.
